Mattie is an artist who was born and raised in Springfield, MN and is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Marquette University and an MFA in Studio Art - Photography from Georgia State University. Most recently, she has served as Lecturer of Photography & Media Art at Wesleyan College and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Her practice includes analog photography and filmmaking, video, sound, found objects, writing, and alternative photographic processes. Much of Mattie’s work involves investigating the potentiality of unsightly, disregarded, mundane, and ubiquitous spaces and materials. One of the questions she asks herself is how to stay open to and give attention to the things and places that have been swallowed up and dismissed by hierarchies of capital and value — how do we contend? She works to uncover a velocity within material surfaces; to make tangible the affect of attention, forces, exchanges, desire, value, and time.
